A conference titled “Accounting, Independent Auditing, and Sustainability from a Practitioner’s Perspective” was held at the Oğuzeli Vocational School of Gaziantep University (GAÜN). The conference was coordinated by Lecturer Dr. Ayşe Nur Mercan and moderated by Lecturer Yaşar Ede.
Speakers at the event included İbrahim Halil Nergiz, Chair of the Audit Committee of the Gaziantep Chamber of Certified Public Accountants and Tax Advisors (SMMM); Emre Yıkıcı, Secretary of TESMER; and Serdar Sert, Member of the TESMER Board of Directors.
The speakers shared their experiences with the students regarding post-graduation career planning, key considerations during internship and employment processes, and practical situations that may be encountered in professional life. İbrahim Halil Nergiz illustrated the practical importance of accounting and independent auditing with concrete examples, noting that the concept of sustainability is becoming an increasingly decisive factor in today’s professional practice.
Emre Yıkıcı emphasized the importance of education, continuous professional development, and competency acquisition in the accounting profession, evaluating TESMER’s role in this process within an academic framework. Serdar Sert, meanwhile, addressed the importance of professional competence, ethical principles, and continuing education in the accounting and auditing professions from a holistic perspective.
Noting that the conference took place in an interactive setting, Lecturer Dr. Ayşe Nur Mercan stated that the event, enriched by students’ questions, made a significant contribution to strengthening the bridge between theory and practice.
GAÜN Oğuzeli Vocational School Director Prof. Dr. Tuba Direkci emphasized that such events are important educational activities that prepare students not only for graduation but also directly for their professional careers. Prof. Dr. Direkci noted that the conference, which brought practitioners and students together, made a strong contribution to the development of professional vision and the accurate understanding of industry expectations. She added that academic-industry collaborations will continue to grow in line with the goal of cultivating qualified human resources.
