PANEL ON THE PENAL SYSTEM AT OĞUZELİ VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

In collaboration between the Department of Law at Gaziantep University (GAÜN) Oğuzeli Vocational School of Higher Education and the Ministry of Justice’s Gaziantep Şehitkâmil Open Prison, a panel titled “From Theory to Practice: The Structure and Operation of Correctional Institutions.”

During the panel, Osman Koray Mülayim, an administrative officer at the Gaziantep Şehitkâmil Open Correctional Facility, provided information on institutional management, administrative processes, and the application of legislation. Social Services Specialist Özlem Özdemir also briefed the students on the rehabilitation processes for inmates and detainees, as well as psychosocial support initiatives. Expert Instructor Eyüp Gümüş delivered a presentation on in-house education and training activities, vocational courses, and social and cultural development programs.

During the presentation, the functioning of the administrative and hierarchical structure of correctional institutions was discussed in detail. The importance of rehabilitation, education, and social service activities within the institution was emphasized. In addition, real-world scenarios, success stories, and professional experiences were shared to provide graduates of the Correctional and Security Services program with insight into the work environment they can expect after graduation. Following the presentations, questions from students regarding their future careers and aspirations were answered.

Speaking about the panel, Oğuzeli Vocational School Director Prof. Dr. Tuba Direkci noted that as a vocational school, they strive to provide students with both practical experience and theoretical knowledge, stating: “Through field trips, conferences, or panels, we want students to see how the knowledge they gain in class translates into real-world applications. As part of ‘June 6 Correctional Staff Day,’ this panel—jointly coordinated by staff from the Gaziantep Şehitkâmil Open Correctional Facility and our Law Department faculty—addressed many topics of practical interest to our students.
