Dr. Derya Çevik Taşdemir, Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the Property Protection and Security Program at the Oğuzeli Vocational School of Gaziantep University (GAÜN), under the coordination of Instructors Mehmet Palabıyık and Yasin Eroğlu, a seminar on “Fire Safety and Evacuation Methods” was held for faculty members and students.
During the seminar, it was explained that the purpose of such training is to develop the ability to respond correctly and effectively within a short time in locations where fires are likely to occur, particularly in educational institutions, hospitals, shopping centers, factories, and other organizations with high concentrations of people. It was noted that in the event of a fire at a school, workplace, factory, or similar location, temperatures can rise above 500 degrees Celsius within the first five minutes, and it is extremely difficult for the human body to withstand such temperatures without personal protective equipment.
Noting that over 8,000 fires and emergency incidents occur annually in Gaziantep, GAÜN Lecturer Mehmet Palabıyık emphasized that the initial response to a fire is of vital importance and that this response can only be carried out using fire extinguishers; and that homes must be equipped with early detection systems and fire extinguishers.
Prof. Dr. Memet Şahin, Director of the GAÜN Oğuzeli Vocational School, who emphasized the need to give serious consideration to disaster preparedness during the seminar, said, “We will continue to provide theoretical and practical training within our vocational school to meet the need for qualified personnel in the fields of civil defense and firefighting,” he said.
