Gaziantep University (GAÜN) Students from the Criminal Justice and Security Services Program in the Department of Law at the Oğuzeli Vocational School participated in a technical field trip organized by the Ministry of Justice’s Kahramanmaraş Training Center for Correctional Institutions, where they received hands-on training related to the profession of correctional officer.
Organized by Law Department instructors Ali Balkan and Hasan Fehmi Gidergelmez, Bülent Delibalta, Public Prosecutor and Director of the Kahramanmaraş Training Center for Correctional Institutions, gave a presentation to the students on the structure, operations, and responsibilities of the institution. The students’ questions regarding the correctional officer profession were answered by Center Director Bülent Delibalta and Deputy Director İlknur Görgel. The students were given a tour of the Education Center campus, where they were introduced to its activities.
During the afternoon portion of the technical tour, students received hands-on training in the Correctional Institutions Training Room on key considerations to keep in mind while performing their duties. In particular, the search procedures at the entrance to correctional facilities and the areas where technological devices fall short during these searches, methods used to conceal items prohibited in correctional facilities, real-life examples from prisons, and seized items were explained to the students by Lecturer Arslan Derinkuyu, an expert on the subject. During the training, Deputy Warden Mustafa Yeşilyurt provided information on the procedures and rules that must be followed when public officials and attorneys enter prisons, as well as potential issues that may arise. Later in the training, Assistant Professor Ali Beyazıt, Chief Correctional Officer, concluded the session by explaining the structure of the prison’s standard units—including cells, common living areas, and other facilities—using a simulation room.
In the final segment of the technical tour, Assistant Professor Mehmet Konuş, an expert in professional intervention, delivered a training session on the principles of responding to incidents that occur in correctional facilities. After explaining the concept and types of use of force, students were provided with the relevant shields, helmets, batons, and “robocop” uniforms to practice putting on the gear used in incident response and learn the precautions to take during their use.
Expressing their views on the field trip, Instructors Ali Balkan and Hasan Fehmi Gidergelmez thanked Bülent Delibalta, Director of the Kahramanmaraş Training Center for Correctional Institutions, for his close cooperation and hospitality, all the instructors who contributed and provided support, and Prof. Dr. Memet Şahin, Director of the Oğuzeli Vocational School, who spared no effort in supporting and encouraging the technical field trip.
