A multifaceted effort to combat addiction has been launched through a collaboration between the Oğuzeli Vocational School of Gaziantep University (GAÜN) and the Narcotics Crime Bureau of the Gaziantep Provincial Police Department.
Led by GAÜN Lecturer Zeki Sunar and with the support of officers from the Gaziantep Provincial Police Department’s Narcotics Bureau, a conference titled “The Best Narcotics Officer Is a Mother” was organized for the vocational school’s academic and administrative staff.
The conference, which drew significant interest from the Vocational School’s academic and administrative staff, was attended by police officers from the Provincial Police Department’s Narcotics Bureau and the Oğuzeli District Police Department. Narcotics Bureau officers, who participated as guests at the conference, provided information on the harms caused by drugs to humans. They emphasized that families must be particularly vigilant, at what age groups and among which at-risk youth substance abuse typically begins; how families should protect their own children, the young people in their communities, and the youth who will shape our future; and how to identify a suspected substance abuser without drawing attention to them. After the participating officers shared their professional experiences with the staff, questions from the college staff were answered during the event’s Q&A session.
Emphasizing that families, along with young people, must be made aware of these issues and that the fight against addiction begins first and foremost within the family, the Narcotics Bureau officials stressed that if substance use is prevented at the very outset through family vigilance, the fight against addiction can be waged much more effectively. Oğuzeli Vocational School Deputy Directors Dr. Emrah Sıtkı Yılmaz, Instructor Dr. Orhan Ecemiş, and Department Vice Chair Instructor Zeki Sunar also thanked the participants for taking part in such an event and for contributing to raising awareness among themselves and the college staff on such an important issue.
